Kirk and his command crew prepared to depart Vulcan and return to Earth to face the court martial. Realising the signal the probe was broadcasting was the song of a Humpback whale, a species long since extinct on Earth, Kirk and his crew travelled back in time to retrieve a mating pair of the creatures. How they achieved this remains classified by the Federation Department of Temporal Investigations, but on their return, the Bounty crash-landed in San Francisco Bay.

The two Humpback whales were released to commune with the probe, which subsequently departed.
